Charleston History and Collectible Books

1. Our Charleston 1670 - 1860 Booklet 1960 Edition - Charleston is the oldest and second-largest city in the southeastern State of South Carolina, the county seat of Charleston County, and the principal city in the Charleston--North Charleston--Summerville Metropolitan Statistical Area. The city lies just south of the geographical midpoint of South Carolina's coastline and is located on Charleston Harbor, an inlet of the Atlantic Ocean formed by the confluence of the Ashley and Cooper rivers, or, as is locally expressed, "where the Cooper and Ashley Rivers come together to form the Atlantic Ocean"

2. Famous Charleston Firsts Booklet May 1969 - Paperback 15 pages. Published May 1969 by the first federal savings and loan association in charleston, south carolina.

"Possibly it was this cosmopolitan population of the city plus it enormous wealth that caused it to produce so many "firsts," as will be seen in the following pages." Quote from Howard F. Burky, President...First Federal Savings and Loan...Association of Charleston

3. Lord Ashley Coopers Dictionary Of Charleston - Although, as everyone knows, Charlestonians speak perfect English, residents of many other sections of the United States unfortunately do not. Ironically, these sloppy talkers from elsewhere complain sometimes, while visiting the Holy City, that they can- not understand the pure and clear accents of Charlestonians.

To remedy this deplorable situation, Ashley Cooper, columnist for The News and Courier, started publishing certain Charlestonese words in his column. A number of readers sent Charlestonese contributions, which also were published.

Now, for the first time (fust toyme), Charlestonese words have been compiled into a Dictionary. Published by The News and Courier, the "Dictionary of Charlestonese"

4. Battle Of Fort Sullivan Booklet June 11, 1966 - Fort Sumter is a Third System masonry sea fort located in Charleston Harbor, South Carolina. The fort is best known as the site upon which the shots that started the American Civil War were fired, at the Battle of Fort Sumter on April 12, 1861. In 1966, the site was listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

This Booklet published by Historic Charleston Re-Enactment, Inc.
