Flea marketes in South Carolina (near Charleston) at one time was one of the most popular outings for families. When the weekend came it was time to plan a day with the family browsing for popular flea market items while grabbing up a few hot dogs and drinks from a flea market vendor for a nice outdoor lunch. Before long these outdoor flea markets turned into a place where you could find hot selling wholesale flea market items, antiques and collectibles for collectors or even other vendors / merchants that resold the items in auctions or at swapmeets.

Eventually the flea markets turned into a place where you could find many different kinds of merchants that sold a very wide range of flea market items. In some cities such as Charleston South Carolina, people would bring their own possessions to the market, setting up a small table to sell various used goods. In other cases, a merchant or vendor may actually be a dealer of used goods who either frequents these markets or runs a store and travels to the flea markets to buy and sell items.

Flea markets are very similar to garage sales which is where you would usually find items that included old clothing, books, toys, household knickknacks, lawn and garden tools, sports equipment, and board games. Larger items like furniture and occasionally home appliances are also sold. The difference here is that garage sales would typically be held at the residences garage, driveway, carport, front yard and occasionally, the interior of a house.

Today the flea markets are still popular but not as much as they used to be at one time. Many are finding online flea markets to browse or even places such as CharlestonSwapMeet.com to post items on for sale. With the rise in popularity of the Internet many are now buying and selling items online due to the ease of posting items online. While the flea markets and garage sales still are great places to go, the Internet online vintage flea markets and online shopping flea markets will always be the most popular.
